BMW has announced a major strategic shift for its China product lineup. Milan Nedeljković, Chairman of BMW Group, confirmed that the brand will completely exit the small and compact vehicle segments built on the UKL platform in China, marking the largest regional product line adjustment BMW has ever made for the Chinese market. The UKL front-wheel-drive platform has long been BMW’s most mature and volume-driven architecture for entry-level models, offering more accessible pricing by adopting a front-wheel-drive layout.

BMW to Phase Out UKL FWD Lineup in China, Shift to Electrification

Built on the UKL platform, BMW has launched multiple entry-level products including the 1 Series Sedan, 2 Series Active Tourer, 2 Series Gran Coupé, X1 and X2, covering both sedan and SUV segments. Following this adjustment, the familiar entry-level front-wheel-drive BMW models will no longer receive iterative updates. Essentially, BMW is voluntarily abandoning the entry-level fuel vehicle market to redirect all resources to its New Class electrification strategy. The move comes as China’s rapid electrification has continuously squeezed the living space of entry-level luxury fuel vehicles, making a timely pivot a more sensible choice.
